Roseanne McNulty must exit the mental hospital in Roscommon, Ireland, where she has lived for 50 years and will soon be demolished. The hospital's psychiatrist Dr. William Grene is called in to examine McNulty. She is fascinated by Roseanne's mysterious rituals, tics, and biblical devotion. This Bible, which has been in the hands of Roseanne for years, contains drawings and daily messages. When Grene delves into Roseanne's past, we see her as a young and attractive woman. We learn that young Roseanne has moved to Sligo to work in her aunt's cage, where she fell in love with a fighter pilot. But the town's priest also falls in love with Roseanne.
